How to be safe and secure when travelling in Indonesia – SOS International – English
2 min readBeautiful beaches, a lovely weather and excellent food are often mentioned as the reasons for a trip to Indonesia. But what should you think about when travelling to Indonesia? How is the crime rate and how do you secure you and your family best – no matter if you are on a beach holiday, backpacking or on a business travel?
At SOS International we help Nordic travellers if they get sick or an accident occurs while travelling. Below we have gathered some good advice for a safe and secure travel to Indonesia.
The general security situation in Indonesia
There is an elevated security risk of terrorism and crime. in general, the threat of terrorism is high.
The most common type of criminality in Indonesia is opportunistic, i.e. “easy” victims are sought out, where the risk is minimal. This includes various types of theft and in some cases robbery. Most crime is petty of nature (pick-pocketing, bag-snatching and opportunistic theft).
Violent crime is less common, but is on the rise due to an increased accessibility of firearms.
The presence of a large number of local and international Islamist extremists as well as self-radicalised individuals leads to an increased threat of terror attacks.
The capacity of well-organised terrorist organisations has decreased due to the efforts of security forces.
