Can Amsterdam’s “Stay Away” Campaign Put An End to Passport Bros?
2 min readUK‘s hotspot for all things unconventional, Amsterdam, launches its “Stay Away” campaign aimed at young British men.
Sex tourism is no secret and if you’re wondering whether you missed the hype — does the term “passport bros” ring a bell? The phenomenon went viral last year, with men leaving their countries to find women they were more compatible with. The trend is clearly sex tourism, the act of traveling to other countries to engage in sexual activity, or as some like to claim “find a wife.”
Amsterdam has seen an influx of its own in regard to sex tourism, as Amsterdam is known for its Red Light District. As BBC referred to it, this campaign is a “digital discouragement,” aimed towards men 18 to 35 and “being pushed out by the dutch city’s council.” The goal is to “clean up Amsterdam’s raunchy reputation as Europe’s most liberal party capital.”
The campaign video features young British men being arrested and documented by police — and the kicker? This video will pop up as an online ad any time anyone in Britain searches keywords like “stag party, cheap hotel or pub crawl Amsterdam.”
As we previously reported, passport bros follow a similar sentiment — except theirs involves finessing underprivileged women into marriages. In fact, Brazil recently placed a similar ban, warning its women to be mindful of predatory passport bros.
Could these bans become the new norm? And do you think these laws can truly extend to protecting women?
