Irish expat shares her struggles with dating in Australia
3 min readA single Irish woman living in Australia has expressed her struggle with dating Down Under and sought advice about the unofficial ‘rules’.
Jade has been ghosted and ‘left on read’ when trying to get to know men in Sydney, leaving her confused and at a loss of what to do.
Sharing her frustrations on TikTok, she asked others for an insight into the dating culture – but many women admitted they’re ‘equally confused’ and ‘in the trenches’.
‘Hi, can someone please explain to me how Australian dating rules work? Because I don’t f****** get it,’ Jade said.
She added: ‘I do not understand. I feel like if you say one wrong thing, you’re left on read.
‘The amount of dates that have been organised and then the guys just never text me again has never happened anywhere else in the world.’
She said ‘every woman’ she speaks to has had the same experience.
‘I just want a mullet boyfriend, is that too much to ask?’ Jade joked.
Fellow singletons provided some honest advice on the topic and the video quickly went viral.
‘Dating in Australia is like walking into a red-flagged carnival. Don’t bother. I now own cats,’ one admitted.
‘Dating isn’t really a thing here.. you hook up and if you vibe you keep hooking up until eventually no one leaves and then you’re a couple,’ another wrote.
A third added: ‘We don’t have rules. You just fight for your life.’
Someone else joked: Australian here! I don’t know either. Hope that helped.’
Since publishing the clip, Aussies have shared their own struggles and guidance in attempt to help Jade.
Alisha shared a response video and was happy to share her tips when it comes to looking for ‘the one’.
First, she advised to ‘never’ give your date your Instagram handle – she didn’t specify why but most agreed it was for safety and privacy concerns.
Next she added: ‘Don’t feel guilty about talking to multiple people, cause the Lord knows the man you’re talking to is talking to multiple women.’
The third and perhaps most controversial point was to ‘run’ if someone you’re dating is from Bondi.
‘Just remember the hot girl summer mantra: Australian men are here for a good time, not a long time. So if you want to find yourself a hubby, you may as well pack your bags and move to Europe,’ she said.
