Bali tourists warned of new danger lurking on streets
2 min readTravellers to Bali are being warned about a new taxi scam in which drivers imitate popular ride-share companies.
In Bali, the most popular taxi company is Bluebird, known for its bright blue vehicles.
However, the Indonesian island’s tourism board Wonderful Indonesia is warning some drivers are imitating the brand colours and logo.
The board urged travellers to use well known and verified ride-share apps in Bali.
“Beware of ride-hailing scams by choosing trusted apps like Gojek and Grab,” it said.
“Their reputation for safety helps you dodge fraudulent services.
“Travel smart, stay safe!”
Wonderful Indonesia added travellers can stay safe by verifying driver details, using in-app safety features, sticking to official pickup points and reporting anything suspicious.
Smartraveller, the Australian government’s travel advisory service, has also warned travellers over taxi scams on the island.
“Crimes involving taxis and taxi drivers occur,” it said.
“Solo women are at higher risk.”
It comes as Smartraveller changed its travel advice for the region on Monday in the lead-up to next week’s high-stakes 2024 general election in Indonesia.
The warning stated, “frequent political rallies and possible protests” were likely to occur in the lead-up to the election.
“Expect traffic delays and restricted access to locations if protests occur. Avoid protests and demonstrations and monitor local media for the latest updates,” Smartraveller said.
The election will take place on February 14, and will see more than 200 million Indonesians vote for their next president.
There is currently an “exercise a high degree of caution” warning for Indonesia.
“Be alert to possible threats. Popular tourist areas may be the target of terrorist attacks,” the warning states.
Indonesia remains a top tourist destination for millions of Australians each year. In 2023, it was the number one travel spot for Australians, according to data from Bupa Travel Insurance.
