Cancun Ready To Fight Against The Imminent Arrival Of Sargassum

First and foremost, sargassum has not yet reached the beaches of Cancun.

The Wells and Beaches Directorate has been monitoring Cancun’s beaches since 6 a.m. this morning, as the sargassum season is imminent, according to Antonio Chambé, director of this organization.

“The brigades continue to work manually, and Zofemat has the mechanical sweeper to help us,” Chambé said.

He emphasized that the sargassum season has not yet reached the coasts of Cancun and explained that what has been seen in recent weeks is seagrass, which is also removed so that the beaches look clean of any organic matter.

“Some media claimed it was Sargassum, but in reality, it was not. Sargassum has not affected or reached us so far. There are some comments at national and international level that a sargassum stain is on the way to Cancun, but as we have always said, this is a natural phenomenon that has no schedule, and we have to wait for its natural arrival to start collecting it.”

Chambé also explained that, based on initial reports from Marinos, it will most likely arrive between mid-March and early April.

“The season will start when the winds start to shift. So far, the cold fronts have persisted. At the Department of Public Services, we are prepared for the arrival as we are every year,” he said.

Currently, 180 people are tasked with cleaning the public beaches, but if necessary, 200 more people from various municipal directorates will be seconded to deal with sargassum.

“We will reinforce the task with 200 more people. That will happen in mid-March and early April, when sargassum begins to wash ashore. Last year, it was February 6 when sargassum first arrived,” he said.
