New Zealand is embracing the digital nomad trend, allowing visitor visa holders to work remotely. In an attempt to boost tourism and economy, the New Zealand government announced that all visitor visa holders—including tourists, family visitors, and long-term guardians—can legally work for overseas employers while enjoying their time in New Zealand, starting from January 27, 2025. This move positions New Zealand among the growing list of countries catering to digital nomads. Other countries that have a dedicated digital nomad visas to attract professionals who blend work with travel are Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Spain, and Portugal, among many others.
New Zealand has been an attraction for Indians for a while. In a report by Mint, the total number of Indian visitors in 2023 had increased by 124 per cent compared to 2019. In fact, the report also suggested that as per Tourism New Zealand’s research, there are around 16.4 million people in India actively considering a holiday to New Zealand.
With its vast landscapes, strong digital infrastructure, unique cultural landmarks like Hobbiton, and Taranaki Maunga—a mountain that recently got recognised as a legal entity, with the same legal right as a person—New Zealand is an exciting destination for remote professionals who are seeking both work and adventure.
What the new rules allow
If you’re a digital nomad, a freelancer, or a remote employee, you can now answer emails, attend virtual meetings, code, create content, and write reports while enjoying the natural beauty the country has to offer. Under the updated regulations, you can work remotely for an overseas employer or clients while holidaying in New Zealand as long as 90 days without breaching any visa conditions. However, if you’re planning to stay beyond 92 days in a 12-month period, you may need to consider some tax obligations. These conditions apply to those entering on a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) as well.
What’s off-limits
If you’re travelling to the land of kiwis under this visa, there are few restrictions. As a remote worker, you cannot engage with New Zealand-based businesses or individuals in exchange for payment or services, for instance, working for accommodation. If you want to work for a local employer you will have to apply for a specific work visa, or if you’re there on business purpose then acquire a proper business visa.
What about taxes?
If you’re working remotely for an overseas client while visiting New Zealand, you might need to pay tax. But don’t worry—if your income is already taxed in another country, you could be off the hook, as long as you stay under 92 days in a 12-month period. And if you’re from a country with a tax treaty with New Zealand, you may get an even longer break—up to 183 days. It doesn’t have to be consecutive, so multiple visits within a year still count.
Where to apply
You can apply for the new visa online via New Zealand’s digital immigration portal.
