Becky G’s Biggest Travel Hack Is Bringing Tajín Wherever She Goes
4 min readI absolutely love to travel. I think you kind of have to as an artist! You experience new places, try different foods, meet incredible people, and it is such a natural way to get inspired. Whether it’s a vacation or a tour, the excitement is always there for me.
I went on my first tour across the US last year, and we had a tour bus—bunk beds and all! I was so hyped to finally live that tour bus dream. There’s something magical about being on the road, creating a show, and meeting fans across the country. It was such a fun experience, and I can’t wait to do it all over again.
One of my most memorable trips I have taken was when I traveled to Jalisco with my family. Returning to where my family roots are in Mexico holds a special place in my heart. And I can’t recommend the sunsets there enough—they’re breathtaking. That trip inspired so much of the music I’m sharing now through Encuentros. It’s a deeply personal and beautiful homage to my past, my family, and my heritage, while also staying true to who I am today. With my last album, I explored every corner of my journey—those intersections between LA and Mexico. But with Encuentros, it’s about finding new meaning in those corners and discovering deeper connections so I knew I wanted to go back to where it all started so I went to Jalisco. During that trip, I was celebrating my birthday, surrounded by family in this magical place where my history began. It was an unforgettable moment, surrounded by food, mariachi, tequila, the whole family – just full of love and inspiration.
I filmed my own music video for the first time in Monterrey for my song “Como Diablos” and it was so special. It was the first time I ever filmed a video in Mexico. The whole crew was so friendly and I felt so at home. It was extremely hot and the filming was so long but I will never forget it. Just the day before, I was singing at the Baja Beach Fest over there and I was performing my song “Por El Contrario” for the first time and I got so emotional. All I could see was a sea of flashing lights and everyone was singing along. I got goosebumps and everything. I remember when my biggest fear was to sing in Spanish but my fans have embraced this journey with me. They connect like I connect to my music and I felt so blessed to be there, in Monterrey, doing what I love doing.
Rapid fire
Window, middle, or aisle seat?
Window because it’s nice to look out when traveling.
Pack light or overpack?
Depends on the trip. I wouldn’t say I overpack, I would say I come prepared. I am the type of person that packs with the mentality of “What if I will need this in the future?” You never know!
Favorite way to pass time on a plane?
Listening to music or audio books. I am a big fan of personal empowerment books. If I’m not sleeping, I am probably listening to something.
Biggest travel fear?
Probably that I lose my luggage.
Best tip for fighting jet lag
Jet lag can be brutal—I’ve definitely been caught in a few interviews with my fair share of jet lag. My trick is to hydrate like crazy, squeeze in a little exercise, and whatever you do, don’t pass out before sunset. Get your body clock back on track!
The one thing you should always pack on a cruise?
Sunscreen!
Top tip for new cruisers?
Just in case, take motion sickness medicine and wear comfortable shoes.
Favorite travel snack?
Anything spicy. I love some Hot Cheetos or Takis. It needs to have a little hot kick to it.
Go-to drink order on a plane?
I wish it was more exciting but honestly anything that keeps me hydrated, which on a plane is usually a bottle of water. It’s boring, but any type of travel dehydrates me, so I know I’m doing myself a favor by sticking with water. I don’t know who I’ve got to talk to about getting coconut water on planes but that would be a dream come true!
