We are all living in this fast-paced world, and as it grows more and more demanding, the act of slowing down can sometimes work wonders. A new travel trend is inviting holidaymakers to hit the brakes and savour their journeys. Known as “slow travel,” this movement focuses on meaningful connections, cultural immersion, and sustainable exploration.

The Slow Travel trend is not just about the destination – it’s about the experience along the way.

What is Slow Travel?

Slow travel prioritises quality over quantity, encouraging travellers to immerse themselves in local cultures and embrace sustainability. Henrietta Loyd, co-founder of cazenove+loyd, explained to Country & Townhouse: “A lot of our clients live very fast-paced lives, and so they want to completely switch off… connecting with nature, appreciating the world around them, and simply slowing down.”

Travel journalist Susan B. Barnes echoed this sentiment on Bloom Tampa Bay, stating, “Too often, vacations become a whirlwind of packed itineraries, leaving little time to truly appreciate a destination. Slow travel, however, shifts the focus to savouring experiences, creating meaningful memories, and connecting deeply with local culture and landscapes.”

Why is Slow Travel on the rise?

According to Travel and Tour World, a recent survey by Scott Dunn found that 81 per cent of British holidaymakers in 2024 prioritised “slowcations,” trips designed for relaxation and disconnecting from daily stresses. Meanwhile, a YouGov study revealed that over three-quarters of Britons value vacations combining cultural immersion, historical exploration, and sightseeing.

How to perfect the art of Slow Travel

  1. Rail travel

Rail journeys are reportedly making a comeback. Trains allow travellers to sit back, relax, and enjoy scenic views while accessing remote destinations often missed by car or plane.

  1. Hiking and cycling

Exploring on foot or by bike offers the perfect opportunity to take in your surroundings at your own pace.

  1. River cruises

As Bloom Tampa Bay notes, “Unlike bustling ocean liners, river cruises provide a slower, more intimate travel experience.” These cruises allow for extended stays at each destination, balancing cultural immersion with relaxation.
