At the heart of it all lies one key question: how much are you willing to spend? With flight prices climbing and budgets tightening, it’s easy to wonder if a cheap last-minute holiday might be the way to go. There are still plenty of destinations worldwide that offer fantastic value for money once you arrive, giving you plenty more bang for your buck.

10. Portugal

Portugal enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine each year, with beautiful beaches and vibrant cities to explore. It’s one of the best value destinations in Europe and is ideal for those who love to explore. Portugal is also renowned for its port wine, produced in the scenic Douro Valley, which is well worth a visit, along with Porto, home to historic tasting rooms and lodges where you can try all kinds of port. For those who crave a more energetic break, the Azores – an archipelago off the coast of Portugal – offers breathtaking hikes and stunning landscapes.

Costa Rica topped the chart for the best place to retire abroad in 2024, according to the International Living Index, when housing, climate and cost of living are taken into consideration. It’s among the smaller Central American countries, but it has a lot to offer. In Costa Rica, you’ll have access to both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, jungles and volcanoes. Make sure to take advantage of the amazing wildlife, whether you go whale watching, watch baby turtles hatch or get up close to some sloths.

7. Mexico

4. Thailand
