If your passport is expired, delayed, or just hiding in your junk drawer, don’t worry. Your tropical getaway isn’t canceled!

There are 26 incredible islands you can visit without a passport. Whether you want to sip rum on the beach, hike through a jungle, or dive into island culture, these destinations deliver the vacation you’re after with zero border control.

I’ve been lucky enough to explore Puerto Rico and St. Thomas myself, and trust me, you’re not sacrificing anything by not having your passport.

These spots feel just as exotic, just way easier to get to.

🇵🇷 Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is vibrant, historic, and packed with adventure.

I wandered the colorful streets of Old San Juan, explored centuries-old forts, and cooled off in waterfall-fed swimming holes. One thing I always recommend because it was one of my favorite experiences is a food tour through Old San Juan! I went with The Spoon Experience and had a great time.

🇻🇮 U.S. Virgin Islands

If you want to feel like you’ve flown to a foreign Caribbean country but without needing a passport, this is it. I visited St. Thomas and was blown away by the mix of lush hills, white sand beaches, and lively island culture — all with U.S. cell service and zero customs hassle.

Each island in the USVI has its own personality. Here’s how they stack up — and why you should try to visit more than one.

St. Thomas

St. John

  • Trunk Bay: Snorkel the underwater trail.
  • Cruz Bay Landing: Cozy spot for brunch or happy hour.

St. Croix

  • Buck Island Reef: One of the only underwater U.S. national parks.

🇬🇺 Guam

If Puerto Rico is the U.S.’s Caribbean gem, Guam is its underrated Pacific paradise — and it’s way more than just a military base or refueling stop.

Even though it’s over 6,000 miles from California, Guam is 100% U.S. territory, so no passport is required. But culturally? It’s a fascinating mix of Chamorro tradition, American comfort, and Asian influence, thanks to its proximity to Japan and the Philippines.

If you want a tropical destination that feels truly different but still has Target and Taco Bell down the road, this is it.

  • Two Lovers Point: Dramatic ocean views and a sweet love story.
  • Ypao Beach Park: Chill snorkeling and picnicking.
  • Proa Restaurant: Famous BBQ and oceanfront vibes.

Tip: Fly through Honolulu to avoid international layovers.

🇲🇵 Northern Mariana Islands

If you want to get way off the beaten path without needing a passport, the Northern Mariana Islands are your golden ticket. Most travelers have never even heard of this U.S. territory, but that’s part of what makes it so special.

Located just north of Guam, this volcanic island chain of 14 islands is full of pristine beaches, WWII history, and crystal-clear water. And unlike more touristy spots, the Northern Marianas feel like a true hidden gem.

🇦🇸 American Samoa

If you’re looking for a destination so wild and untouched that it feels like you’ve discovered a secret, American Samoa is it.

This tiny U.S. territory in the South Pacific is often overlooked, even by seasoned travelers. But for those who make the journey, it’s one of the most rewarding passport-free adventures you can have as an American.

It’s home to lush volcanic peaks, black sand beaches, Polynesian culture that’s been preserved for centuries, and the most remote U.S. National Park in the entire system. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Hawaii before it was popular, this is probably as close as it gets.

Note: Bring a certified birth certificate in addition to your ID.

✅ What To Bring Instead of a Passport

  • Valid government-issued ID (REAL ID recommended)
  • Certified birth certificate (only for American Samoa)
  • Domestic-only routing for flights (especially to Guam & Marianas)

🔥 Why Now?

These islands are trending (especially Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) thanks to passport delays and surging interest in easy, no-hassle summer escapes. Prices are rising fast, so early booking is key.

Plus, you’ll skip customs, currency headaches, and international roaming charges.

I’ve made unforgettable memories in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and I can’t wait to explore more of these off-the-radar islands. With 26 to choose from, it’s never been easier to plan your dream tropical trip — no passport needed.

So grab your flip-flops, book your ticket, and enjoy your stress-free island escape.
