This Peaceful Gem in Connecticut Is the Next Big Thing in Slow Travel  Only In Your State

Are you interested in mindful living, making deep connections with nature, or savoring local culture? If you answered yes to any of these, then you’ve discovered the meaning of slow travel. The older I get, the more intentional I have become, so slow traveling is right up my alley. When I plan a trip, I prefer to avoid the crowds, have no itinerary, and fully immerse myself in the experience. If this sounds like something you’re interested in doing, you’re ready for a slow travel destination in Connecticut. Luckily, I found the perfect place for you. River Highlands State Park is a lesser-known hidden gem in Cromwell that might just be the next big thing in slow travel.

At only 177 acres, River Highlands is not the biggest state park in Connecticut, but it certainly packs a mighty punch. Tucked along the Connecticut River, this peaceful haven invites guests to unplug, slow down, and fully connect with nature.

Here, you’ll find seven miles of hiking trails meandering along the water’s edge, crossing footbridges and tranquil streams, and they also traverse alongside a 150-foot bluff. The multi-use trails are great for hikers, joggers, and mountain bike riders. For those seeking solitude, consider the White Blaze Trail, River Highlands Red and Green Trail, and River Highlands Green and Orange Loop, which offer just that. As you stroll through the tree canopies with glimpses of the serene river, you’ll find yourself fully immersed in nature. It’s unlikely that you’ll run into other hikers as you trek. This means you can wander at your own pace and find secluded spots to sit and soak up all the surrounding beauty.

Bring your mountain bike for extra adventure; the routes are easy and great for riders of all levels. Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, with a little bit of patience, you might spot white-tailed deer and various species of birds. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars with you.

To extend your stay in this uncrowded gem, you’ll need to plan ahead and book your campsite in advance. One night, riverfront camping is available, but the sites are accessible only by kayak or canoe. So, camping here is perfect for those seeking to get away from it all. Pack a fishing rod and enjoy peace and quiet along the banks of the scenic waterway. Of course, you’ll want to carve out time to paddle the Connecticut River. You could easily make this tiny, scenic park your very own outdoor playground.

When you’re not exploring the park, get acquainted with the town of Cromwell. Take a stroll through the historic Main Street District to admire the 19th-century Greek and Colonial Revival-style buildings. The charming district has tree-lined, pedestrian-friendly streets with family-owned restaurants and quaint shops.

Be sure to stop by the Cromwell Historical Society to meet the locals and learn more about the rich heritage of the community. Due to its location along the Connecticut River, you’ll also find riverfront parks and activities along the historic Riverport district. I love that Cromwell hosts various events during the year. If you’re there during the fall, check out the Fair Weather Growers’ Fall Festival, which brings the community together. This hidden gem destination definitely invites you to explore at a slower pace and savor all its charm. If you need a place to stay, this serene lakefront cottage in nearby Middletown is the perfect place to rejuvenate your soul.
