Solo travel can seem intimidating at first, but many find it uniquely gratifying.
In a 2024 Skyscanner survey, 43% of the 2,000 American respondents said they took a solo trip that year with plans to do it again. Their top reasons for traveling by themselves were for self-care, personal growth and having the freedom to follow their own schedule.
As many solo travelers know firsthand, where you go can make all the difference in your trip. Heading to a far-off destination that’s tricky to navigate can be stressful for first-time solo travelers.
Tripadvisor recently dropped its Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best 2026, including a list of the top solo travel destinations, based on millions of reviews and ratings from real-life travelers made between October 2024 and September 2025.
“Solo travel can be incredibly rewarding, but it asks more of the traveler,” Tripadvisor’s Chief Communications Officer Laurel Greatrix said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our 2026 Solo Travel Destinations reflect where solo travelers consistently say they had great trips — places that tend to feel welcoming, manageable, and genuinely enjoyable when you’re traveling alone.”
Here are the best destinations for solo travelers, according to Tripadvisor.
Cape Town Central, South Africa
With its somber history, multicultural background and natural landscapes, Cape Town offers travelers a fulfilling trip. People can visit historical sites such as Robben Island, dedicated to Nelson Mandela, or explore the outdoors. About an hour’s drive from the city is the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, featuring 30 square miles of hiking trails, beaches and wildlife.
Bali, Indonesia

Bali isn’t just for surfers or yogis, but anyone looking for a tropical escape. Although this Indonesian island is not exactly off the beaten path, it is still beloved by many travelers. This year, it earned the title as Tripadvisor’s top destination in the world, not only for its stunning beaches and tropical jungles but array of activities like manta ray snorkeling, batik fabric workshops and more.

Exploring Berlin can feel like being in both the past and the future. The city is home to Museum Island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring five world-class museums – and to historical sites like the Berlin Wall and the Holocaust Museum, which are somber yet must-visit places. However, the city is also energetic, with its cutting-edge fashion, techno clubs and modern art galleries.
