Amger: Postcard-perfect Portuguese villa that makes a case for slow living in North Goa
5 min readIndia, Oct. 16 — A drive away from the parties and palm-lined beaches of Assagao and Anjuna lies a 130-year-old restored Portuguese villa that marries heritage charm with contemporary comfort. Designed as a family home, it overlooks paddy fields and is wrapped in the romance of Juliet balconies, arched windows, and a grand Mangalore-tiled roof. Mornings here begin with coffee on the balcao, afternoons bring elaborate chef-cooked meals (fish thali included, of course), and evenings are quiet and contemplative. This is slow travel, redefined. Here’s what a long weekend at the villa Amger, in Parra, Goa, looked like.
Few places in India inspire an itinerary as eclectic and exciting as Goa’s. You can go from surfing to shopping at a flea market to sipping a chorizo cocktail (cheers, Slow Tide) on the beach, all within a few hours (assuming you have a car). Let’s not forget the raves, ferry rides, dining establishments, and beer on tap. This ‘buzz’ is particularly central to North Goa, home to some of the region’s most popular haunts. But about 45 minutes into my drive from the new MOPA Airport, I’d realised that my home for the next few days offered something softer, slower, and altogether more soulful.
Property Review of Amger villa in Parra, North Goa
In the sleepy village of Parra, this 130-year-old restored Portuguese villa opens up to a lush, half-acre garden with sweeping views of paddy fields. The name ‘Amger’ translates to ‘our home’ in Konkani, and perfectly encapsulates the warmth of the space-both in design and in the welcome extended by the staff who greet you at the tall gates. It’s also a nod to the fact that the owners, Arun and Alok Lalwani, envisioned it not as a rental, but a second home to gather, unwind, and reconnect. They roped in restoration expert Nachinolkar Ketak and architect Supriya Gandhi of The Workshop, adding their own lived-in layers and textures along the way.
A refreshing welcome drink in hand, I wandered through the fruit of their labour. This 5,550 sq. ft. villa is modern and luxurious, yet retains its old soul. A breezy balcao (Goan porch) with chic upholstered pieces overlooks a private pool and a tropical garden with over 2,500 native plants and 100 trees. Birds provide the soundscape, butterflies flit through flowering bushes, and a quiet machan at the edge of the property offers uninterrupted views of the paddy fields. I made a mental note to finally get some reading done there.
Inside, the red Mangalore-tiled roof, original shell windows, and Juliet balconies meet raffia and wicker wall art, tumbled stone floors, crochet cushions, and quirky knick-knacks from the owners’ travels. The living room, especially, is breathtaking with its crepe chandeliers, statement lights, and art by Goan creatives like Richa Kashelkar. Few spaces feel this curated yet so effortlessly lived-in.

Rooms at Amger, Goa
Each of Amger’s four bedrooms has its own personality, yet they remain part of the larger aesthetic dialogue: earthy, artistic, and deeply textural. They come with en-suite bathrooms, televisions, and private balconies. The master bedroom, located downstairs, is wheelchair- and senior-friendly with double-width doors, a built-in bench, a hand-held shower, and access to a spacious verandah. A breezy second bedroom on the same floor offers large windows that open out into the garden. Upstairs, two more bedrooms open onto a cosy family room. One of them features his-and-hers sinks and soft lighting, ideal for winding down after sun-drenched days.
Dining
The dining space is anchored by a grand 8-seater table beneath a sculptural crepe paper chandelier. On-call Chef Sohail is known for his elaborate breakfasts and unhurried Goan lunches. I kept things local, digging into poee and poha in the mornings, followed by rich red meat curries and fish staples in the afternoons. Fruit platters and fresh juices were a constant. All ingredients are brought in fresh from the local market by the staff each morning. In the evenings, kokum sherbet was my go-to. While the villa doesn’t serve alcohol, the staff is happy to help you stock up from a nearby liquor store.

Final thoughts
In a region where every third building claims to be a “luxury villa,” Amger stands apart for its sentiment and stunning attention to detail. Every tile, tree, and table here feels intentional. Whether you’re a family seeking stillness, a group of friends craving privacy with personality, or a couple wanting to retreat without retreating too far from Goa’s bustle, this is a place to bookmark.
