4 Countries Expats Call Easiest to Restart Life, Survey Finds

Moving abroad to start fresh has become more than just a distant dream for millions. According to the InterNations Expat Insider survey, over 10,000 expats representing 172 nationalities shared their experiences living abroad, revealing some surprising truths about where life feels most manageable for newcomers.
While traditional Western destinations continue to attract attention, the data shows a clear shift toward countries that prioritize affordability, warmth, and genuine welcome over prestige alone.
Panama
Panama ranked highly among the best countries for expats, with 94% of expats reporting happiness with their life abroad. The country combines exceptional financial satisfaction with streamlined visa processes and enviable work-life balance, with 74% reporting financial satisfaction compared to just 54% globally.
What sets Panama apart isn’t just the numbers, though. The country offers “a perfect mix of decent infrastructure at affordable prices in combination with a pleasant climate and most importantly, a culture that’s open, friendly and easy to integrate with,” according to InterNations’ Chief Marketing Officer.
Panama has long been known as an affordable destination for expats, where you can live comfortably for about $800 to $1,500 per month in small towns, villages and farming communities, while those in Panama City require up to $2,500 monthly. The country particularly appeals to retirees, with 35% of respondents already retired and 18% saying their primary motivation for moving was retirement.
The Friendly Nations Visa and Pensionado program offer attractive pathways, with the retirement visa requiring just $1,000 monthly pension income.
Colombia
Colombia ranked among the top countries for expats, with 81% of respondents satisfied with their financial situation. The survey found that an impressive 92% of expats say their disposable household income is sufficient to lead a comfortable life in the South American country.
Beyond the financial appeal, Colombia shines in what matters most for those starting over: human connections. Like Panama, Colombia excels in the ease of settling in index, with expats appreciating “the friendliness of the population.
They feel welcome. They find it easy to integrate into the local culture and to make friends”.
The commitment runs deep, with 36% of expats saying they wanted to stay in Colombia forever, and another 47% having no clear plans of leaving the country. The country offers affordable living, rich culture, and stunning landscapes, drawing those seeking adventure and a more affordable lifestyle.
Mexico
Mexico ranked as a top expat destination for happiness, with 90% of expats satisfied with their quality of life. The country wins expats’ love due to the friendliness of its people, with 85% noting they feel welcome, ranking first in getting used to local culture and second for finding local friends.
From 2019 to 2022, the number of Americans who applied for or renewed residency visas spiked from about 17,800 to more than 30,000. , diverse cities, and vibrant culture, making it an easy transition for many.
Mexico topped InterNations’ 2023 Expat Insider survey and has ranked among the top five countries since 2014, with expats appreciating factors such as the ease of settling in, fulfilling social life and strong support networks. Expats also appreciate the local job market and career opportunities, with 43% claiming complete work-life balance satisfaction compared to just 25% globally.
Indonesia
Indonesia ranked highly among top expat destinations, highlighting its remarkable combination of affordability, job satisfaction, and work-life balance despite significant infrastructure challenges, achieving 84% overall expat satisfaction despite ranking near the bottom for digital infrastructure. 5 hours.
The low cost of living is by far the biggest factor, with affordable housing, transportation and everyday expenses making it budget-friendly, while expats also recognize Indonesia’s diverse culture and rich history across its many islands. Another major factor in the country’s popularity is the Indonesian people, who are known for their hospitality and friendliness toward foreigners.
The country represents part of a broader trend showing eight of the top ten expat destinations coming from Latin America and Southeast Asia, regions that excel in affordability, work-life balance, and social integration while providing lifestyle value that increasingly appeals to mobile professionals and retirees. These four nations demonstrate that successful expat life isn’t about finding the most prestigious address or highest salaries.
