Vietnam Claims the Affordability Crown

For the fourth consecutive year, Vietnam is the most affordable country in the world for expats, ranking first out of 46 destinations when it comes to personal finances, according to the 2024 Expat Insider study by InterNations. The statistics paint a compelling picture of financial satisfaction here.

In Vietnam, 89% of respondents were pleased with the general cost of living, while 87% of respondents said their disposable household income was about or more than enough to lead a comfortable life. What makes Vietnam particularly attractive is the monthly living costs.

In Ho Chi Minh City, nomads can spend between US$1,000 and US$2,000 monthly inclusive of accommodation and other expenses. The staying power of this destination is remarkable too – 54% have lived there for five or more years already, and 30% want to stay forever.

Colombia’s Rise as an Expat Haven

Colombia ranked fifth overall in the 2024 survey. The financial satisfaction here is extraordinary: the majority of survey respondents said their disposable income was enough to live comfortably – 92% compared with 69% globally.

Panama Retains Its Top Overall Position

The happiness levels here are remarkable: A cool 94 percent of expats in Panama are happy living there, thanks to the country’s beautiful natural environment, an affordable cost of living, and the ease of settling in.

Panama’s appeal extends beyond just finances. “It has a perfect mix of decent infrastructure at affordable prices in combination with a pleasant climate and most importantly, a culture that’s open, friendly and easy to integrate with,” Kathrin Chudoba, Chief Marketing Officer at InterNations, tells CNBC Make It.

Living costs vary by location, with about $800 to $1,500 per month for comfortable living in small towns, villages and farming communities, while those looking to live in Panama City, the capital of Panama, will require a higher monthly budget of up to $2,500.
