Welcome to back to another instalment of Traveller of the Month! This month we’re meeting Saskia (she/her) from the travel blog Sas Crossing Countries.

Each month on Teaspoon of Adventure I’m featuring a travel blogger to help build connections within the travel world and share some new travel stories with all of you. I’ve been doing this series for a few years now and it’s always so fun to learn more about my fellow travel lovers!

So without further ado, let’s get to know March’s Traveller of the Month, Saskia. (Who just celebrated a birthday, Happy Birthday Saskia!)

And if you missed February’s featured traveller, get to know Jess here!

Introduce yourself! What’s your travel story?

I’m Saskia and I live in The Netherlands with my partner, Thijs, and our two sons. I blog about our family travels. We prefer to go on road trips that will take us to every corner of a country.

I’ve loved traveling ever since I was a little girl. I went on my first holiday with my family when I was one year old and from then on, until I was 16, all summer holidays were spent in countries we could drive to easily from our home country.

My wanderlust never stopped. In fact, it only grew and I feel very fortunate to be able to travel as much as I do. And even better: I get to do it with my family.

It is my belief that showing kids the world and teaching them about other cultures is the greatest gift a parent can give them.

How did you decide to start your travel blog and what sort of stories do you share there?

My love for travel, photography, travel planning and writing led to the birth of my family travel blog, Sas Crossing Countries. I published my first blog post on my 40th birthday in 2019.

The main focus of the blog is sharing our own travel experiences in the form of extensive road trip itineraries, city guides and family travel tips (how to plan a family road trip, how to travel sustainably, etc).

By sharing this information, I hope to inspire other parents to fill up their backpacks and give their kids the world. Traveling with kids is fun, it just takes a little bit more planning and a bit more patience.

What do you do when you’re not travelling or writing about travel?

Blogging takes up about 20 hours of my week. I also have a full time job as a program manager Urban Development for a Dutch university. The rest of my time is spent with my family and friends playing, cooking and having drinks.

What is the best piece of travel advice you’ve ever heard?

Just go! If you have the means, make the time. You’ll never regret going, but you might regret not going.

What do you want to inspire other travellers to do?

I often speak to parents who don’t dare travel outside of their country or state with their kids. They want to, but they believe it’s dangerous. My dream is that some of these parents read my posts and decide to go for it.

What is the longest trip you’ve ever been on? Shortest?

The longest trip was 6 weeks, traveling through Australia. The shortest must’ve been the 24 hours I spent in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein.

Travelling has made me…

Travelling has made me more tolerant and street smart.

What’s something you do, pack or eat on every trip?

My bamboo cutlery; every family member has their own set. We try to avoid as much single use plastic as we can on the road.

What is still on your travel bucket list? What have you recently checked off?

I still haven’t been to Japan. A country I’ve dreamt of visiting since I was a little girl. I’ve also always wanted to go to Uzbekistan and I’ve just got back from an amazing 9 day trip.

Best food you’ve eaten on the road? Worst?

The best food I’ve eaten on the road is pizza and pasta in Italy. The worst is definitely fermented shark in Reykjavik, Iceland.

What destination would you go back to over and over again? What destination would you never go back to?

Italy, Germany and Australia are countries I can never get enough of. Liechtenstein was fun for 24 hours, but it was enough.

What destination is calling your name in 2025?

Antarctica in 2025. I’m saving up for it. My family members don’t feel like going, so it will be a solo trip.

Which celebrity would you want to travel with and where would you go?

Madonna, she must have so many amazing stories to tell. And I’d like to go to Mongolia with her. High up on my bucket list and I feel like it’s very much out of her comfort zone, so that should be interesting.
