Are you looking for the most affordable digital nomad destinations in Thailand?

I’ve got you covered with this list! Thailand is a hugely popular destination for digital nomads thanks to its affordable prices, beautiful scenery, and friendly people (it’s not called the Land of Smiles for nothing!)

Americans can now stay in Thailand for up to two months visa-free, making it even more attractive for digital nomads. And the country is in the process of launching a five-year digital nomad visa if you want to make Thailand your permanent home.

The good news is, you can live anywhere in Thailand for less than $2,000 a month, and live well at that.

But what if you’re on an even tighter budget? Maybe you’re new to the digital nomad lifestyle and you’ll be living off savings while you get set up. Or maybe you’ll be working online for a lower salary, or you just want to save as much money as possible.

In that case, it’s even possible to live in Thailand for under $1,000 a month.

This is easier to do in some places than in others. According to data from Nomad List, these are the best, cheapest digital nomad destinations in Thailand.

1. Chiang Mai

One of the top digital nomad hubs in Thailand happens to be the most affordable! You can live in Chiang Mai for just $979 a month for one person.

Chiang Mai is a city in the mountains of northern Thailand. It’s less humid than the rest of Thailand and can have a milder climate, making it an ideal place to live.

For digital nomads, the best area to live in is the Nimmanhaemin neighborhood, without a doubt. You’ll find tons of modern condos with amenities like gyms and rooftop pools, as well as cafes and coworking spaces — Yellow Coworking is a really popular one!

2. Ko Lanta

Most of Thailand’s islands are a bit pricier than the mainland, but Ko Lanta is the most affordable island for digital nomads if you dream of living close to the beach.

The average cost of living in Ko Lanta is $1,193 per month, but you can keep that under $1,000 if you’re willing to stay in accommodation with fewer trills and limit splurges.

It’s worth it to live in and work from paradise!

3. Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is another city in northern Thailand that’s super affordable, with an average cost of living coming in just over the $1k mark at $1,026 per month.

It’s a smaller city than Chiang Mai, so it’s a good option if you’re looking for somewhere to base yourself that is a bit less touristy and has more of a local feel.

Chiang Rai is an amazing city for culture (you can’t miss the city’s impressive temples like the White Temple and the Blue Temple!) and it’s a gateway to the beautiful surrounding countryside.

4. Pai

If cities aren’t your vibe at all and you’re looking for somewhere more chill and laidback to base yourself, look no further than Pai. At $1,092 per month, this gorgeous small town in the mountains of northern Thailand is an affordable place to live.

It’s very popular with tourists because it’s become something of a hippie haven. You also can’t beat the scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Two of the best spots to work from in Pai are Two Huts Cafe and Om Garden Cafe — both have yummy menus and unbeatable views!

5. Udon Thani

Finally, the cheapest place for digital nomads in Thailand is Udon Thani. You can live here for approximately $879 per month.

This mid-sized city is off the main tourist trail in Thailand, but it’s a very livable city for digital nomads, and it’s full of beautiful temples and architecture.

It’s also just 1.5 hours from Vientiane, the cool capital city of neighboring Laos.
