EU revolutionizes train travel with sustainability and convenience

The European Union is redefining rail travel with transformative initiatives aimed at making train journeys more sustainable, efficient, and accessible.

Recent regulations under the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) have been implemented to enhance rail connectivity, marking a significant step toward greener travel across Europe.

Central to this transformation is the EU’s Action Plan for Long-Distance and Cross-Border Passenger Rail, launched in 2021.

The ambitious plan seeks to double high-speed rail traffic by 2030 and triple it by 2050.

The European Commission is also championing 10 cross-border rail pilot projects, designed to streamline international rail connections.

Young adventurers are set to benefit from the DiscoverEU programme, which provides free travel passes to 18-year-olds.

This initiative not only promotes cultural exchange but also highlights the environmental benefits of train travel.

The next round of applications is anticipated in autumn 2024.
