Gili Islands Named Most Googled Tourism Destination by Americans
2 min readAccording to the international media outlet Travel + Leisure, Gili Islands, West Nusa Tenggara, is the most searched destination on Google by those living in the United States in 2024.
Such discovery, first published on the media’s website on the 30th of December, 2024, was retrieved by Travel + Leisure after looking up the annually released Google Year in Search.
As quoted from Travel + Leisure: “It’s a surprising honour when you consider the Gili Islands are just three teeny, tiny islands [Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air] in Indonesia, nestled close to Lombok. However, when you look at a few Google images of the Gili Islands, it’s easy to see why more people are searching for a way to get there. They are, quite simply, drop-dead gorgeous.”
Travel + Leisure continued praising the islands, saying, “The [Gili Islands] are surrounded by gin-clear waters that lap warm, white sand beaches. The landscape is a lush, tropical forest punctuated by swaying coconut palm trees, making it a picture-perfect escape. And for divers, things get even better, thanks to the underwater installation titled ‘Nest’ by Jason deCaires Taylor, located off the coast of Gili Meno, which includes 48 figures circled on the ocean floor, which has also become a stunning marine habitat teaming with life.”
Regardless of this accomplishment, the Head of the Class 2 Organising Unit Office of Pelabuhan Pemenang, I Ketut Muliana, previously divulged that the number of tourist visits to Gili Trawangan, in particular, decreased by 10% at the end of the year 2024 in comparison to the same period in the year 2023. One of the main factors affecting this decline was weather conditions. High intensity of rain and sea waves reaching 2.5 metres in the Lombok Strait were a major challenge for shipping activities.
“This condition not only affected the smooth transportation to the Gili Islands but also increased tourists’ alertness to travel,” explained Muliana to the press on Monday, the 30th of December, 2024, as well.
That being said, weather challenges are typically considered nothing new for maritime tourist destinations like the Gili Islands. This decline aside, Muliana also discovered that, on average, one to two thousand tourists would visit this particular destination per day, especially Gili Trawangan.
“We hope that tourists will remain vigilant and careful when visiting [Gili Islands], especially with the unpredictable weather conditions. Gili Islands [nonetheless] remain a destination worth visiting with all its charm,” concluded Muliana.
