Where to Stay Near Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu: 6 Best Hotels

One of my favorite places and neighborhoods to stay in Kathmandu is around the Boudhanath Stupa.

With Tibetan monasteries and noodle shops, quaint sidestreets, and underrated cafes, this area of Kathmandu has a serenity to it, unlike Thamel or other popular zones of the city that many first-time visitors find lodging in.

Sure, Boudhanath may be a bit removed from the “center” of Kathmandu—requiring a 15-20 minute moto taxi ride—but perhaps because of it, it is a much more authentic—and I’d argue safer—area to find accommodation in.

I’ve lived in Kathmandu for nearly a year, but on my recent solo trip back here, I chose to stay close to Boudhanath for the reasons I mentioned above—not even bothering to search for hotels or hostels in Thamel.

In this guide, you’ll find my top recommendations on where to stay near Boudhnath; the best hotels and guesthouses (including where I stayed for 2.5 weeks!).

The Best Boudhanath Hotels for Your Stay in Kathmandu

Ananda Treehouse Homestay (Best Budget Hotel Near Boudha for Solo Travelers)

• 10-minute walk to Boudhanath Stupa
• On-site healthy vegetarian cafe/coffee shop (also one of the best cafes around Boudha)

Ananda Treehouse is a guesthouse and a vegetarian cafe owned and operated by the kindest people.

Meaning, that not only will you have the security and support of the owners/staff who live on-site, but you’ll also get access to the cozy, public cafe filled with lots of natural light, plants, books, and artisanal goods.

It’s very cozy, personal, and just the right balance between personal, private comfort and social space.

I found this place on a last-minute whim, the night before I flew to Kathmandu. And wow, I am forever grateful for finding it (or perhaps, for it finding me!) because my stay here exceeded my expectations. Check rates and availability here ✨

As a guest, you will stay in one of the private bedrooms on the upper floors of the building.

Each room is minimally yet intentionally decorated, with comfortable beds and linens, a desk, and furniture for storing clothes. The bathroom is shared per floor, so between 3-4 bedrooms, and features Western toilets and solar showers.

Going downstairs in the morning, to a light and plant-filled cafe and a healthy breakfast with organic coffee or tea, was the best way to start my day—slowly and without pressure to get out into the city.

I’d highly recommend staying here, especially if you are a solo female traveler who isn’t fussy about next-level comforts. It is safe here and way better than staying at a hotel where you don’t get to know the owners, staff, or locals so personally. They are also pet-friendly!

LaVie Residence Hotel & Spa

• Great location, 10 minutes walk from Boudha

For an upscale stay, you can’t go wrong with LaVie Residence and Spa. It is one of the top hotels in the area with an overall excellent score of 8.8/10.

As a 3-star hotel, you can expect next-level comfort and design—always hot showers, an on-site spa and restaurant, AC/heated rooms, and an included continental breakfast.

Aside from all the extra perks, it’s the spacious rooms that steal the show with king beds, garden views, desks, and private balconies or terraces, plus complimentary slippers and toiletries.

Considering all that is included, plus their guest feedback, meditation rooms, and spa services, their nightly rates are quite reasonable—even their deluxe rooms with balconies cost only $50/USD! Check room availability here.

Pema Boutique Hotel

• $34+/night
• Prime location in a local neighborhood on the outskirts of Boudha
• Sunny rooms with balconies, restaurant & bar, free breakfast (for Genius members)

For something a bit closer to Boudhanath and relaxed without compromising on comfort, turn your attention to Pema Boutique Hotel.

Pema is a great option for couples or families looking to have a bit more space, as this hotel offers serviced apartments on top of deluxe rooms.

A quality to appreciate about Pema Boutique Hotel is that, unlike so many hotels in Kathmandu, there is a lot of natural light flooding the rooms.

ViaVia Boutique Hotel

• Costs $38+/night
• King bedrooms with ensuite private bathrooms (some with balconies/terraces)
• 10-minute walk to Boudhanath Stupa

For a bit more typical hotel-style accommodation (with a boutique twist) with all your creature comforts, look to ViaVia.

It’s among the newer boutique hotels in the area and with that, a fresh slab of services and amenities to make your stay extra comfortable including hot showers, extra large beds, air-conditioned bedrooms, and private bathrooms.

What’s unique about ViaVia is its Tibetan-Nepali style, proximity to the stupa (10-minute walk), and 19 modern, individually decorated rooms, inspired by Vajrayana Buddhism (which is fitting as Boudhanath is the epicenter of Buddhism in Kathmandu).

Aarya Chaitya Inn

• Budget-friendly with cheap nightly rates
• Super close to Boudhanath
• Garden, terrace, comfy rooms

With an interior garden, comfy but simplistic rooms, and being mere steps away from the Boudhanath Stupa plus myriad cafes, restaurants, and shops, you’ll not be lacking much at the Aarya Chaitya Inn.

And all for a nice budget rate of only $19-22 USD/night (with standard single rooms for solo travelers priced at around $15/night).

This is a great budget hotel option near Boudhanath Stupa and would be ideal for solo travelers or couples.

Hotel Padma, Khumbu Hotel, and Little Buddha Inn

• Check rates
• Rooms with a rooftop overlooking Boudha Stupa
• On-site beautiful restaurants

There aren’t many hotels circling the Boudhnath Stupa place, save for a couple: Khumbu, Padma, and Little Buddha Inn.

So if you’re hoping for a hotel with a view of the Boudhanath Stupa, then check out any of these.

Khumbu Hotel is located right on the edge of the Boudha kora.

The downside of staying here is the possible noise since Boudha is one of the top heritage sites to visit in the Kathmandu Valley.

However, getting to wake up to the view of the stupa is pretty unique. That doesn’t mean you could spend your afternoons or mornings on another rooftop cafe overlooking Boudha (not just that of your hotel).

In any case, Khumbu Hotel, while not the best in terms of style or comfort, brings you the closest to the heart of Boudhanath Stupa itself.

I prefer to stay in more local accommodation, hence why Ananda remains my top choice even if it is not quite “hotel-y.”

If I were looking for extra comfort on my vacation, however, I’d choose Lavie!

But no matter where you choose to stay around Boudha, I’m sure you will fall in love with the tranquil atmosphere. It truly is different from the crazy chaos of Thamel.
