Get off the Beaten Path With a Day Trip from Sarajevo, Where You Won’t See ANY Tourists
2 min readIf you are planning a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina, approximately zero people will tell you to head to Olovo for a good time, but there are plenty of reasons that you should!

This small town can easily be visited in a day trip from Sarajevo, and while you won’t see any of the country’s big tourist attractions, you will have the experience all to yourself!
Take in Olovo’s Natural Beauty
Olovo is nestled in a valley surrounded by rocky cliffs. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular!

Take a drive through the beautiful Krivaje Canyon along route R467. You can even stop to take a hike by the river.

Hike to the Mysterious Obelisk
Deep in the forest near Olovo you will find one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s ancient mysteries: The Obelisk.

Nobody knows the purpose of the stone obelisk or how it came to be in the middle of the forest.
The hike is approx 500 meters uphill, but it is an easy path and not too steep.
Have a Meal at Zapp Oil & Restaurant
Is there better fun than discovering a cute little restaurant behind the highway side oil change and gas bar? Okay, maybe…but the Restaurant at Zapp Oil on the outskirts of Olovo is still very fun.

There are covered outdoor eating areas with a view into the ravine and a children’s playground complete with trampoline, swing set, and jungle gym.

The menu has a good selection of Bosnian food, and was possibly the best that we had in the whole country!

The restaurant part is called Restaurant Nisici, but it will not come up on Google maps unless you use the Bosnian spelling of “restoran.”

Visit the Ancient Tombstones of Gojsalici
A little further up the highway from Zapp Oil and Olovo is Nekropola Stecaka Gojsalici.

There are ancient nekropola like this throughout the country, but this one is particularly picturesque.

Built on a little hilltop, this graveyard has large, well preserved, ancient tombstones and a view of the valley.

Well this road trip is short but sweet! All of this is easily accomplished in a day from either Sarajevo or nearby Visoko.
You can also see all of these sights on your journey from Sarajevo to the north of Bosnia if you want to go to Tuzla or Gradacac.
There might not be any blockbuster famous things to see in the area around Olovo, but it was very memorable for us, and you are virtually guaranteed to see no other tourists!
