Spain has been ranked as the best country for US nationals seeking an overseas retirement, according to research conducted by Global Citizen Solutions, a leading investment migration firm. The firm’s Retirement Index, developed by its Global Intelligence Unit, evaluates key factors like living costs, healthcare, and retirement visa availability. Spain claimed the top spot, surpassing Portugal, Costa Rica, Uruguay, and Mexico, which rounded out the top five.

The country has become a preferred destination for European expats thanks to its mild climate, affordable living, tight-knit communities, and rich cultural scene. According to Expatistan, living expenses in the US are 75% higher than in Spain. In fact, living in Madrid is 67% more affordable than New York, 49% cheaper than San Francisco, 46% lower than Miami, and 39% more budget-friendly than Los Angeles.

Spain ranked second for healthcare quality, fifth for its climate, and sixth for its proximity to the US. Despite challenges like pickpocketing in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, Spain’s crime rate was deemed relatively low, coming in at seventh place.

For retirees, the cost of living in Madrid is estimated to range from £1,500 to £1,888 per month (around €1,765 to €2,207). Renters can find a one-bedroom apartment in the city center for £998 per month.

Though the Golden Visa program has been suspended, retirees can still apply for a non-lucrative visa (NLV), which requires proof of passive income or savings of £24,700 annually (or £30,900 for couples), along with private health insurance.

The number of US expats moving to Spain has surged by 25% over the past two years, with 10,000 Americans making the move, many seeking to escape the political climate under former President Donald Trump.

Joining the growing number of expats, American retirees will now be part of Spain’s vibrant international community, which already includes 285,000 British expats and over 8.6 million foreign-born residents.
