This Secluded Gem in Wisconsin Is the Next Big Thing in Slow Travel
3 min read
Tucked away in a remote part of southwest Wisconsin, Anaway Place is made up of seven truly unique cabins on more than 80 acres of forested land. I booked a spring stay at Anaway Place as a mother/daughter trip to celebrate my mom’s recovery from her recent kidney transplant. I was hoping for something calm, cozy, and special. Anaway Place exceeded all of my expectations.
Locals of Richland Center, Wisconsin, may remember the cabin grounds as Candlewood Cabins. The cabins were rebranded as Anaway Place in 2021 to keep with their vision of rejuvenation and connection. My mom and I booked the Little House, which, at 480 square feet, is one of the property’s smaller units. However, the kitchenette, WiFi, full bath, and outdoor fire pit made the place feel five times larger than my Chicago apartment. The idea of staying at this cabin for weeks at a time is not hard to imagine.
There are also six larger cabins to choose from if you think you’ll need more space for a longer stay. For example, the recently renovated barn cabin can sleep as many as 12 people, while the Hillside cabin sleeps up to four people and includes a full kitchen. If you’re looking to truly reconnect with nature, there’s a secluded glass house that magically merges your living space into the surrounding woods. Whatever your party’s needs are, there’s a cabin for you.
Anaway Place’s secluded location makes it ideal for those looking to slow down and get lost in the woods. You’ve likely seen headline after headline about travelers in search of the “slow travel” experience. Slow travel allows you to settle into one location for an extended period of time. It’s the perfect alternative to the jam-packed itineraries of many people’s “big bucket list trip,” where every day is a new city and a new hotel.
With cabins offering the choice between full kitchens and kitchenettes, Anaway Place makes long-term stays simple. Plus, the general store onsite is always stocked with charcoal, apothecary items, gourmet grocery items, and a variety of alcoholic beverages. Guests can easily spend days without leaving the property or use their cabin as the perfect home base for exploring the nearby hiking trails and local wineries. Plus, Anaway Place is less than 60 miles from the beloved Wisconsin Dells. If you’re into experiencing Wisconsin supper clubs, there’s a classic off-the-highway spot down the road called Honkers.
Being set far back from the road, I felt like I was entering my personal forest every time I pulled in. With small trails meandering through the property and aesthetically pleasing architecture at every turn, Anaway Place makes you feel like you’ve joined a little community during your stay. I wanted my mom to be somewhere peaceful where we could hear the crickets sing and celebrate her recovery. Anaway Place left us both feeling refreshed, recharged, and grateful to get lost in nature for a bit. Where else would you go to experience slow travel in Wisconsin?
