U.S. warns citizens not to travel to this popular Asian destination

The U.S. State Department is urging travelers to Indonesia to use “increased caution” when visiting that country.
In fact, it is encouraging tourists to avoid some areas altogether.
While the country as a whole is under a Level 2 Travel Advisory (which means “Exercise Increased Caution”), the department has designated the provinces of Central Papua (Papua Tengah) and Highland Papua (Papua Pegunungan) as “Level 4: Do Not Travel,” the highest travel advisory the state department issues.
In these regions, the state department said, “violent demonstrations and conflict could result in injury or death to U.S. citizens.” Travelers should avoid demonstrations and crowds and be wary of armed separatists that might kidnap foreign nationals.
The advisory warned that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to its citizens in these areas because employees working in Indonesia must obtain special authorization before traveling there.
The advisory also warns that terrorists could attack in Indonesia with little or no warning, “targeting police stations, places of worship, hotels, bars, nightclubs, markets/shopping malls, and restaurants.”
In addition, demonstrations occur frequently in the country and can become violent.
What’s more, the country occasionally experiences natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions. These events, the state department warns, can lead to disruptions in transportation, infrastructure, sanitation, and more.
If you do plan on traveling to Indonesia, the state department recommends the following:
- Monitor local media for breaking news and be prepared to adjust your plans.
- Visit Badan Geologi (Indonesian Geological Agency, Indonesian language only) for the latest information on current natural disasters.
- Be aware of your personal safety and security at all times.
- Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
- Review the Country Security Report for Indonesia.
- Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.
